TURP Surgery for Enlarged Prostate (BPH)
Gold-standard treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia. Improves urine flow, reduces symptoms, and restores quality of life.
What is TURP?
TURP is the gold standard surgical treatment for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) – a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. The procedure is performed using a resectoscope inserted through the urethra (no external incision). Excess prostate tissue that blocks urine flow is removed, improving urination.

Causes (of BPH requiring TURP)
Types of TURP
Diagnosis (Before Surgery)
TURP Treatment (Surgical Approach)
A resectoscope is inserted through the urethra without any cut. Excess prostate tissue blocking urine flow is shaved off using an electric loop
• Monopolar TURP – uses saline with electric current
• Bipolar TURP – safer, less bleeding, preferred. Allows precise removal of enlarged prostate tissue.
After resection, saline irrigation helps prevent clot formation and maintains clear urine flow.
A Foley catheter is inserted to allow healing and ensure proper urine drainage. Usually removed in 1–3 days.
Includes removal of median lobe or lateral lobes causing obstruction. Restores normal urine flow and reduces symptoms
Why You Should Not Delay
Delaying TURP surgery may worsen urinary problems, increase the risk of recurrent UTIs, and cause bladder or kidney damage. Early treatment restores normal urine flow and prevents long-term complications.
